Challenge
Z-Medica, a medical research company specializing in hemostatic agents, had created a revolutionary blood-clotting product called QuikClot® brand hemostatic agent. The adsorbent granules come in a unique sponge format that can easily be applied directly onto a wound. When accompanied by direct pressure, QuikClot can stop bleeding within seconds, even from severe arterial or venous bleeding. The wound can then be treated later at the hospital. The product is the first in history to achieve rapid hemostasis of severe bleeding outside of a surgical setting. Z-Medica sought to produce QuikClot for the United States Military and for various domestic first responder units.

Solution
In the post-9/11 world and with our troops in harm's way, QuikClot needed to be on the front lines immediately. Z-Medica partnered with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Government Affairs Group to introduce this life saving product to the appropriate Federal decision-makers. In the 2006 fiscal year, working with the Connecticut Congressional delegation, Brownstein’s Washington, D.C.-based team helped to ensure that there were sufficient federal funds so that the U.S. military would be able to purchase QuikClot. The next year, efforts were again successful in securing funding so that additional branches of the U.S Armed Forces could purchase needed quantities of QuikClot.

Result
QuikClot is now in widespread use in the military, in first responder and law enforcement units throughout the United States, and within various Homeland Security markets. The product is so effective that a military advisory committee recommended that all soldiers carry packets in their first-aid kits. QuikClot’s successful implementation has helped save a countless number of lives, both here in the U.S. and among our armed forces serving abroad.
