Jared Jones is a seasoned tax lawyer with experience writing, enforcing and interpreting legislation related to all aspects of the U.S. tax code. He leverages his experience drafting tax legislation, litigating tax controversies and advising on the complexities of regulatory enforcement. He draws on this range of experience to bring panoramic insights to the development of actionable government relations strategies for his clients.

Jared joins Brownstein’s Tax Policy team from the IRS’s Office of the Chief Counsel, where he advised the agency on issues including opportunity zones, virtual currency, recognition and timing of income, accounting methods and periods. He first joined the IRS as front-line trial counsel, litigating on behalf of the commissioner. Before his time in the executive branch, he served as a law clerk at the United States Tax Court advising on the legal interpretations of various tax credits, easements and deductions, including proceedings focusing on the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act.

On Capitol Hill, Jared worked on impactful tax legislation for Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). He negotiated the inclusion of opportunity zones in TCJA and drafted the Gigabit Opportunity Act and Creating Opportunities in Rural Economies Act. These latter two acts sought to develop economic growth in low-income and rural communities. He has also worked in private practice, providing counsel on tax issues including historic tax credits, low-income housing tax credits, section 501(c)(2) title-holding organizations, coal severance, intrastate natural gas pipelines and stock redemptions.

Jared is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and an Afghanistan veteran. He is currently an instructor at the Army Command & General Staff College where he teaches leadership and operations to mid-career Army officers.
