Brownstein Adds Former Obama Appointee Jason Buckner to Energy Practice

June 26, 2019

Continuing its growth in Washington, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce that Jason Buckner will join the firm’s bipartisan Energy, Environment and Resource Strategies Group as a shareholder. He will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.

Buckner draws on his unique combination of experience as an Obama appointee to the Department of the Interior, veteran staffer in Congress and corporate affairs executive in the private sector to guide clients in the energy industry through a dynamic policy landscape. Previously, he served as the head of corporate affairs for the world’s largest mining company where he set the company’s Washington strategy and collaborated across international jurisdictions to advise on global policy and political trends.

Before his time in the private sector, Buckner was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve at the Department of the Interior as principal deputy director and director of Congressional and Legislative Affairs. He also served as chief of staff, legislative director and military legislative assistant to Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK), legislative assistant and correspondence manager to Rep. Brad Carson (D-OK) and as a staff assistant to Rep. Denise Majette (D-GA). Buckner started his career in Washington working as an aide in the West Wing of the Clinton White House.

“Jason’s policy background at Interior and in the natural resources industry along with his reputation as a thought leader will be great assets to our clients looking for strategic advice and working through complex policy and permitting issues for their projects,” said Jon Hrobsky, who co-chairs the firm’s Energy, Environment and Resource Strategies Group with Luke Johnson. “His work while a presidential appointee of the Obama and Clinton administrations, along with his time in the legislative branch, gives him great insight into the priorities and mechanics of executive branch agencies and congressional committees of jurisdiction.”

Brownstein’s Energy, Environment and Resource Strategies Group brings together bipartisan senior policy advisors and attorneys who can drive highly complex matters within all three branches of government to achieve successful outcomes for its clients. The team focuses on complex matters that require a multidisciplinary approach to legal, lobbying and strategic services. Collaboratively, the group brings a unique combination of skill and previous federal experience to deliver policy outcomes, project approvals and legal decisions on matters related to energy, the environment and natural resources.

“Brownstein has proven to be an effective bipartisan shop that works across party lines to advocate for its clients,” said Buckner. “The talent in this group is unmatched and I look forward to bringing my perspective to the team.”

Buckner received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland – College Park and his J.D. from Pennsylvania State University’s Dickinson School of Law.
