Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is proud to recognize attorneys Jay Spader and Travis Chance with its 2022 Mentor Awards. Spader, a shareholder in the firm’s Corporate Department, received the 2022 Shareholder Mentor of the Year Award, and Chance, an associate in the firm’s Litigation Department, was awarded the 2022 Associate Mentor of the Year Award. These awards honor mentors who most display the firm’s core values—All In, Excellence, Respect and Giving Back—in their mentor roles.
2022 Shareholder Mentor of the Year
Spader represents first- and second-lien senior lenders, mezzanine investors and private equity sponsors in senior debt, mezzanine and private equity financing arrangements.
His mentees credit him for empowering them to take ownership of their careers by both developing the technical skills to be outstanding finance attorneys and learning how to help the firm’s clients outside of the four corners of a document.
“Jay invests in associates by helping them grow in all aspects of their career, including helping them develop a legal practice and think of business development as an integral part of the job,” said Associate Chris Hand.
“When I started at Brownstein, I had not done a single finance transaction and did not expect myself to be in that practice,” said Associate Marcela Dye. “Now I feel like a full-fledged finance associate, and that’s because of Jay’s dedication to our finance training programs as well as his individual dedication to us as associates.”
2022 Associate Mentor of the Year
Chance handles issues in a variety of legal areas, including general business litigation, corporate derivative actions, complex commercial construction disputes, anti-SLAPP suits and commercial real estate transactions.
Chance’s mentees say that he cares about their learning and growth, is a thorough and thoughtful mentor and makes them feel valued and supported.
“He’s very understanding and aware of the fact that I might face different challenges and situations as a female litigator, and he’s always supportive and encouraging with trying to help me navigate those situations,” said Associate Emily Dyer.
“He is brilliant in the way that he thinks about the bigger picture and how that filters into everything that he does in the way that he mentors,” said Associate Monique Jammer. “In turn, that thoughtfulness and intentionality are what I’ve developed most and what have been most beneficial from his mentorship.”
Spader and Chance were recognized at the firm’s All Attorney and Policy Retreat on Oct. 21.
